    And?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by dropkicker, Aug 18, 2010.

Can anyone tell me when it is appropriate to use "and" in the beginning of a sentence?

In formal writing, like scholarly essays or reports for professional journals, you should not begin a sentence with And. But in most writing, such as fiction, it is acceptable to begin a sentence with a conjunction, like this sentence. In fiction, there is even room for sentence fragments. Yes, fragments.

If you're doing it too frequently, though, you will annoy readers. And your writing will seem choppy.
