Maybe Wolf's Rain? *shrug* idk i've watched Code Geass, as well as many other animes. Haven't had the time to do much more than bounce around and watch a few snippets, but from what I've heard Wolf's Rain is focused more on the journey, and the characters are all focused on one ultimate goal: Paradise. It's based after wolves have supposedly been extinct for two hundred years, and they can make themselves look like humans. Its definitely sci-fi esque, but it also has fantasy elements. I'm going to go back and watch it for once.
Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorites. Madoka Magica is also up there - it's magical girl at first, but with a darker premise. Although if you want a fun, short anime that kinda takes the piss out of anime, Ouran High School Host Club is hilarious.
