I want to write a pile of letters

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by aguywhotypes, Apr 10, 2015.

I was challenged by a question I came across somewhere online.

If you could write anything what would it look like and be?

I want to write letters that when read would be a story about this character's life.

I'm so overwhelmed I don't know anything about it.

Is it just one person or multiple people. Maybe a bunch of sisters or ???

I want it set before the internet, otherwise why write letters, leave email instead.

I want to have a twist at the end. I have no idea what that might be.

Could anyone help me get started or point me in the direction I should go. Do I need to research something? I'm at a total blank.

Here is the thing. it wouldn't be in a book. The finished product would be actual physical letters in envelopes that would be wrapped in twine and stuffed in a tattered brown bag or shoe box or perhaps wrapped in kraft wrapping paper and then tied off with twine. That is how it would be sold. That much I do know!

It's an interesting idea, but far too general a question. Something makes me think the letters should come from one person (the main character) and are written to more than one person. You're pretty much on your own, though, as far as developing the characters.

I'd read Letters from a Lost Generation by Vera Brittain

It's called epistolary, and it used to be a very stylish way to right. Pretty much everything written from 1880 to 1910 was like that.
