Hi! I feel awkward asking when I dont know anybody here but, do any of you guys knows/has seen a rare musical instrument? I have this character that appears only for a little while but he's very important for me, and I want to give him an interesting instrument. I do need the guy having the instrument for the main plot and I'd prefer something like a harp or a chelo..you know cords instruments, a bit big. So, anything coming up?
He could play the saw. I've always thought that the saw was a pretty sweet instrument. Alternately, bassoon, djembe, Aztec Death whistle
Clavichords are quite rare these days, they're quite big too, but they're keyboard instruments, not string instruments. Sitars and similar Asian instruments are exotic, but not particularly uncommon in those places (although, as with all instruments, there will be specific rare ones).
why not a lute? first thing that came to my mind when you mentioned string instruments, i mean there are a select group of musicians who practice such things, but as far as i know it's only at fairly prestigious orchestras etc.
I got to hear a dulcimer play the other day. (Yay folk musicians.) Anyhow, it's a beautiful three-stringed instrument, long body, very short neck, and can be carved in numerous styles. I saw one that had heart-shaped soundholes and an infinity-sign-shaped body, but a quick google search shows other pretty designs. It's a sweet, sweet instrument.
Yeah, violas and cellos are my favorite, but for something interesting, I would go with a lyre. Classic Greek instruments like that are cool. Also classical guitars aren't seen very often either, and they put out a very distinct and beautiful tone. - Steve
Oh, then sorry about the bad spelling. I'm not an English speaker (studying though). Actuallymy first thought was the lyra, but I needed something a bit biggger
Here's what I found when I googled "Rare instruments": - Electric harp guitar - Gong - Fences - Fire Organ - Fiddle de-doo - Former Guitars - Freenote Instruments - Bass Stick - A HAPI Drum These were taken from a list at http://www.oddmusic.com/gallery/. They also give where they were used, to give you an idea. Hope this helped - Writewizard
