In other words who do you specifically write to?

Because I tend to write romance that has sexual encounters in them that are graphic. And there are themes of sexual violence in some of them.

Very interesting question for me cause I really don't know. Read some of my Workshop posts and maybe you might have a suggestion. I looked for a 'tripe' section, but, not to be...

I tend to think of my father in law as my ideal reader (see stephen king on writing for the 'ideal reader' concept)... but my target audience is basically those that enjoy Lee hild, Vince Flynn, Mark Dawson and so on ... mostly but not exclusively male, in the 20s to 60s age bracket, with enough disposable income to buy lots of books

Any Goddamned person who will read my book, for starters.

I don't really know. The same people who might enjoy Terry Pratchett, Mervyn Peake, and/or Joe Abercrombie. Something like that. Don't suppose I'll ever approach the quality of any of those authors, but their work embodies certain traits that I would like to see expressed in my own.

Different projects have different target audiences.

    - One thing was for us autistic and people near us - family, pro's...
    - One thing is for folks who like Westlake, Sharpe, Hiaasen, McCall Smith... (Humorous suspense.)
    - One thing will be for those who like to understand certain areas or thinking - and get better or help others in those areas.
    - In future there will be something for those who like tv more than books.
    - And there will absolutely be a lot for kids.
    - And...

I mean I'm my own biggest critic, so not great.

More seriously, I don't write fiction to make money. I give a remarkably small amount of fucks if other people will want to read it or buy it. I write because I enjoy doing it, and because I want to tell stories. I'm happy with people who happen to like the kind of things I write liking it, without trying to tailor what I do to a specific market segment. That would feel far more like a job, and I already have one of those.

Weirdo teen girls, I guess. Mostly because I remember being a weirdo teen girl, and I had such a hard time finding books that I enjoyed. Most of the Young Adult novels I found all seemed really polished and shiny in a way that I couldn't relate to. And a lot of ~adult fiction~ was, obviously, just as unrelatable. But those times when I did find a certain book or author that scratched my literary itch, it felt lovely.

I tore through a lot of Michelle Tea books, but because her style was so beautiful even when her subject matter was mundane or just downright gross. Her characters felt real and relatable in a way that definitely isn't for everybody, but it feels just right for me. I read all kinds of things, especially now that I'm older and have an easier time relating to grown-up characters, but her style always feels like home.

I don't think I'll ever be famous or anything. I don't have anything super profound I'm trying to say. But if one weird kid can pick up something I wrote and get that same feeling that I used to get, I'd be really happy.
