Opinions on name for a Character

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by hrdoyle3, Aug 3, 2012.

I am currently writing a story featuring a female main character. The story is set in a dystopian society in the not so distance future. (So names that are too futuristic are not ideal).

She is 16 years old living with her older brother. Their parents are dead. She has one close friend. Her brother is taken by the society. She sets out to find him.

A few words to describe her personality:
Strong, determined, passionate, hardheaded, and, as the story develops, becomes more opinionated

I really like simple names such as Alice or Lucy(these are the baby names my fiance and I have chosen so I prefer not to use them)

Surname suggestions are not needed, but appreciated!

The brief description reminds me of Alexander the Great... so, Alexandra?

Just my opinion of course, but her nick-name is Dani, short for Danielle. I can just picture her close friend whispering, "Dani, hold back!" And then a legion of the oppressors marching by on the road they were just about to cross...

I feel as if a unisex/boy name or surname as a first would suit her well. I just cant seem to find one that fits right.

Simple, classic names are also appealing.

Here's name I like that to me personally seem like the qualities you described (so may to you too :-D)
    Firstly, I second "Alexandra"
    And some of my own:
    - Allegra
    - Miranda
    - Elizabeth
    - Stacey
    - Freya

If you're stuck, try trawling through baby names sites - it's what I do, and it usually works :)

You may also want to think about what your names mean...EX, I just changed a name from Humara to Hadya because in Arabic Hadya meant sacrifice, or gift. It was fully appropriate. Don't stick to indo-european names either...you might find something a little more exotic that really appeals to your character.

Anne ... I find Anne is a good strong name. Or if its a dystopian society and she's somehow going to instigate a change to this maybe Eve or Evie?

Evie makes me think of V for Vendetta.
