    Excellent TED Talk.

The first example given is a reason you need a doctor who pays attention to evidence based medicine and is aware, for example, how research is presented in conferences by known experts implying they are reporting on their own research when in reality they are on a paid conference circuit. Good doctors are well aware of how drug companies and even independent research isn't always what it appears to be.

The talk is on what I call media literacy and I advocate promoting it. Schools in the US are resistant to teaching media literacy and it's probably the most important subject kids need to learn after literacy and math. I made an effort to teach my son. I couldn't get any of his teachers interested in so much as showing a video revealing the gimmicks in toy ads.
