Suppose an author writes a novel that is then adapted into an oscar-winning film for, let's say, best adapted film. Does the author get an oscar to put on their shelf? Or are the SOL?
Yep. I'm sure they'll get an invite to Oscar night if the movie adapted from their book gets nominated, but that Oscar ain't going home with him/her.
As far as I'm aware, a percentage of the budget is given to option the film rights, but I'm almost certain that's as far as it goes, unless you adapt the screenplay itself/help produce the film.
If you write the novel and do no more then you get nothing. If you write the script for the movie as well then you get the Oscar.
The author gets paid for the right to make the film, but if the author didn't do the adaptation it doesn't make much sense to give them the award for it.
