I agree. But ideally we also want people to vote who didn't enter, so there are more people to appreciate and comment on entrants' stories.

Definitely. The more votes, the more likely the contest will continue.

I wouldn't vote because in that scenario, one of them is mine. I can't evaluate fairly.

Why not? I discount mine immediately, read the rest and choose the best.

But what if yours is the best? You still can't vote fairly.

I'd think of it as "which, aside from mine, is the best?" - in part because I'd likely be biased either for or against mine and know I can't judge it fairly. The rest are fine.

    Yep.

If you think yours is the best, IMO it's still fair to vote for second-best because few of us can objectively judge our own work. If that makes sense?

No, you can only vote for one entry. In the spirit of good sportsmanship, it shouldn't be yours. :)

Yes! Finally. Oh man I've been so waiting for the short story contest to come back. Thanks @Tenderiser for taking on the responsibility. And I do like the new format. Gotta go work on my story now

Can we submit multiple stories? I was thinking of doing one for each prompt. I mean I will probably do regardless it seems like such a great writing exercise, but I am indecisive. I fear I would never be able to choose between two or three of my stories to submit one. lol

I'm glad the prompts are inspiring you! I think we'll have to keep it to one entry per person so everyone's on an equal footing, but you can always post the others in the workshop, or start a thread in Writing Prompts where others can join in. Or even submit them to magazines. :D

I'm not sure what the rules would allow, but...I can remember submitting two stories to the same competition (on a different forum). I'm pretty sure I split the voting for people who liked my style, with the result that I didn't win. That's my story, anyway...

Oh I really do like them great job on them. I really like the whole Scottish folklore one, I have been researching into Scottish traditional folklore to work into my story ever since reading it lol

What are the rules on nudity/sex and the general rudities, and also on swearing ? - I wasn't planning on writing an oil soaked sex scene fit to make E.L James blush but it would be good to know where the lines area. And on the latter point, in my WIP and most things ive written in fact the characters tend to be fairly rough and ready types (soldier, mercenaries/roman centurions etc, so their language tends to be a bit ripe and liable to break the 'don't swear like a sailor' forum rule of conduct.

Really explicit stuff might be an issue because the forum can be accessed by minors. But swearing and 'soft' sex scenes are okay - just put a little warning at the beginning of the post so if anybody is sensitive to that, they're forewarned. :)

Glad to see this back, and happy that @Tenderiser is running it (even though she never voted for my stories ;) ). Never thought the format needed changing, but pouting doesn't suit me, so I won't sulk!

Can I just check about previously published stories (as in published anywhere on the internet)? Does the previous rule still stand that people should not have published a story elsewhere (and not put the story elsewhere on the forum until after voting finishes). This should be made explicit if it is allowed or not, because it will save time later when people argue about it.

Good point. I've added to the rules that stories should be written for the contest... but I don't think we can stop people posting them elsewhere. They still own the copyright, even if (by posting) they give the forum certain permissions to use them.

I mean, my previous entries are on my blog and I know other people have done the same. :D
