Kage Baker's review of early movie screen horror, sci-fi and fantasy

Discussion in 'Entertainment' started by jannert, Aug 8, 2014.

I just obtained a gem of a book (on Kindle) which is also available in paperback and hardback. It's by the late great Sci-Fi/Fantasy authoress Kage Baker and her sister Kathleen Bartholomew. During the last year of her life (she died of cancer in early 2010) Kage sat and watched umpteen silent movies and early talkies on her DVD player and reviewed them for this book.

The book is called: Ancient Rockets: Treasures and Train Wrecks of the Silent Screen

Totally engaging stuff. She reviews things like the original Phantom of the Opera with Lon Chaney in decidedly un-sexy prosthetics, the notoriously and wonderfully creepy Nosferatu, all the old Tarzan movies, The Thief of Baghdad (while tying it into the reality of the city today) and many many others. She also recommends the best way to get hold of these movies, and which DVD issues are the best, and which ones can be found on YouTube.

This is a most entertaining read from a writer who really knows her stuff.
