Beginning and the end

In this game we take the first and last paragraphs of stories we have already written. That way we can see how everyone opens and closes their stories (maybe learn something along the way :O)

My name is Richard al'Gaza and I am a chicken; a Red Phoenix rooster to be exact. I had a home once, before all of this-- An explosion three blocks away reminds me the soldiers are still hunting us. My grip tightens around my kalashnikov, the rifle's body cold and deadly in my hands. In my head I recount the number of rounds left in the magazine. I had a home once, before all of this started; a warm cage on the roof of the al'Hedia hotel. There was a young boy who fed me and my only concern was to alert the world to the arrival of the sun. Footsteps echoed off the bricks of the wall; someone was drawing near. I close my eyes to shutout the traces of teargas and smoke. Alone in this alley, my moment has come. Time to breathe my last breath and join the others. I had a home once; it was nice.

Although I had not crowed since moving to the camp, early one morning I decided to fly up to the roof of the tent. Silently I perched on the ridge pole and watched the colors of the pre-dawn horizon. They told me that there is too much hate for peace to last; but they also say that each day is the same, and that we never change. Just because yesterday was like the day before, does not mean today has to repeat those mistakes. War was nothing like the movies I'd watched, and heroes, nothing like those men. The sun, still below the horizon, began to light the sky. Smoldering cooking fires from the night before created a soft gray blanket across the arid landscape of the tent city. One blanket, shared by one people, with one wish: life free of the hatred which had destroyed our dreams. The sky was now alive with pink and lavender. The sun began to peak its fiery arms into the sky, the light of a new day had come. I filled my lungs with the smoky putrid air. The earthy stench of refugees a perfume which promised life anew. I thought of the boy, the children, and the old man. I thought of the soldiers at home in their beds. Today would be different I thought. And then I crowed.
