    Better luck here.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Daveyboyz, Aug 20, 2010.

    Hello,
I am new here, I decided to switch forums to avoid the fascists on another forum.

Let me tell the story if only just to vent. I asked a question on the experts section asking if electrocution could turn someone into powder, or what process could be employed to turn someone into dust instantaneously with future technology.

After someone repeatedly told me that it doesn't matter it's the future and made accusation that I must lack imagination I explained to them that the only explaination I could see for them posting was that they were either trolling or ignorant that the laws of physics are constant. I then explained that I had been directed to a page that answered my question.

They took this as it was meant and posted that they were pleased I had got the answer I was looking for. Several other people however started making comments saying I hadn't read the newbie forum and to watch it and other comments which clearly weren't useful.

I had read the newbie forum and felt that I had not been disrespectful or breached any rule. I pointed that out and defined 'trolling' and 'ignorant of' and then asked for the thread to be closed since I had my answer and didn't appreciate it being hijacked. I was then temporarily banned when the mod could have just followed my clear instruction and there would have been no further issue.

As far as I can see I was just defending myself and it had nothing to do with these people. Frankly I find it more disrespectful for someone to tell me that my question is unimportant and that I am unimaginative than to be told that my post is either designed to be inflamitory or else I do not show an understanding of the issue. Also to tell me that I haven't read the rules when I haven't contraviened any of them is not helpful without explaination of what I supposedly have done wrong.

My posts are always logical and reasoned and if asked to explain myself I always take the trouble to do so. It seems that the same cannot be said for the mods over there. Hopefully I will find this enviroment less fascistic and the mods will use common sense here.

Now I have given you all the impression that I am trouble lets see if I can be of some assistance somewhere.

    :)

Hello Davey, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

This site's very first rule is, "Remain respectful in all posts, PMs, or other forum communications." We do enforce that rule. So as long as you are respectful toward other posters, there should be no problems.

Please read How to Use the Review Room before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

    Hi,
people often misunderstand everything that is even bit complicated. They try to find simple explanations even where there are none and even make them. But that's how the world spins. I'm also pretty complex thinking person so I don't take for granted that I'd stay anywhere for long. But I try to enjoy staying wherever I am as long as it lasts. You just need to expect getting into situations like what you've described.

Welcome! I myself am a new member to this forum, but I am so glad I found it and that it has been created. I haven't had a huge amount of time to check it out, but I do like the atmosphere. Everyone is very nice. Anyways, Enjoy it!
