Hello everyone. I'm a filmmaking student at UEL. I'm writing a new episode of Black Mirror (I'm about a third of the way through the treatment). It tells the story of a man who signs up to a Facebook-like social network. The network sells his personal data to unscrupulous third parties, and as a result, his life is ruined. My goal is to pitch the episode to Netflix. Would anyone be interested in teaming up with me?
That’s an ambitious move. Considering Charlie Brooker and other famous folk are the main writers, you’d have to convince Netflix to let you write something for an already established show which (in the UK at least) is a vehicle for the talents of a specific person. Have you considered writing the same thing but as a film or a mini series? It may get more traction if it isn’t pitched as Black Mirror.
Someone on another screenwriting platform has pointed out to me that you wouldn't pitch a single episode - you would pitch a whole series. So, I think I'll dial down my ambition and write a speculative script. If I post it on this website, I have no doubt I'll get plenty of feedback.
I'm unsure whether that will top our particular climate. Social media has already been covered quite frequently. You'd need something with more oomph or new angle.
I saw an episode on Black Mirror where a hacker forced computer users to commit crimes because he was blackmailing them.
