    Visual Research On Torture.

Discussion in 'Research' started by The Broken Soul Project, Oct 9, 2017.

I've been trying to find some visual representations of torture on screen. Whether it be waterboarding, dismemberment, any disturbing thing you can think of, if you guys could help me find some torture scenes, specifically ones that involve interrogation, that would be fantastic. Hell articles would help too, specifically on what places cutting would lead to instant death, and what would not kill you but be incredibly painful.

I would suggest you visit Reddit. There's all kind of nasty subreddits with horrible stuff like that from what I've heard.

I may be of use. Considering torture is one thing one of my MCs does quite often.
Although, I have had a scene or two depicting 3 species of women being flayed alive,
just to mess with the psyche of another MC, as well as later on moving into more
direct infliction of pain on them later, for interrogation purposes.

So whats your flavor? As there is more than one way to skin a cat. :p
Death by a thousand cuts? Disjointing fingers, toes, limbs? Breaking
bones? Perhaps a little dental surgery without anesthetic? Blunt force
trauma using ones bare knuckles, phone book, or bar of soap in a sock
method? Simply pulling out ones fingernails, or inserting needles beneath
them? Electro while highly cliche can be applied in many a fashion.
Branding is a pretty useful method. Sound torture using low frequency
modulation to apply physical pressure on the body. Nerves and pressure
points applied with pressure, needles, or files/rasps? Hell even have one
watch as they are helpless to do anything about being mutilated can work.
Sleep deprivation. Deprivation tank and some auditory/hallucinogenic
agent suggested/implied. Genital mutilation is more on the extreme end,
nullification, and the list goes on.
Point being once you know how to elicit and excite the nerves or mind to
fear and pain, eventually you will get a result depending on how strong the
will of the one being interrogated is. Like all things you have to adapt and
evolve over time so that the subject does not become accustom to what is
going on. Though the best approach is to play upon the fears of the mind,
more so than the infliction of physical pain as that can result in a disassociative
state of mind. You need the mind to unlock, more than you need the body
    to destroy.

Nowhere. Even after beheading it takes several (different sources put it between 2-30) seconds for the brain to lose consciousness. "But that doesn't sound like a long time at all," you say. Think of how long 30 seconds feel when someone's locked you out of the bathroom when you really have to go. Now imagine how the discomfort of having something sharp indelicately placed where you'd prefer it not be would make those moments chafe even harder.

So, so many things. Anything that would traditionally inflict non-lethal damage in everyday life forcibly and repeatedly applied to another human being. Cigarette burns, paper cuts, you name it.

ETA: Just FYI, despite what TV and movies have told us, torture is actually a really bad way to interrogate someone. If you torture someone long enough they'll tell you whatever it is they think you want to know in order to stop the torture. Traditionally under fascist regimes, torture was used to get people to confess to crimes they in fact did not commit in order to neutralize them as a political threat. Or for fun. Sometimes food.

There is an awesome new documentary series on Netflix called The Confession Tapes, which investigates the cases of people who confessed to murder under extreme duress who may very well have been innocent. I've only seen the first episode but its crazy fascinating. Disturbing as hell, but fascinating.

A monster will use only that which is evil for evil.
Though the good will use it to effect that will prevent
evil from rising, or taking hold.

God punishes eternally for finite crimes. Man is finite
and can only punish for a finite time. Which means that
God is worse and more deplorable than any man/woman
    to ever exist.

The worst torture is hope. Give someone hope that if they do what you say, tell you what you want to know, do something impossible that you paint as plausible, then no: they won't be have their arms tied behind their back and hung like a chicken, they won't be left wallowing in a pile of their own excrement, that they won't be forced to watch as their wife who they've sworn to protect is tied before them and repeatedly violated. If you give them hope, tell them that you don't really want to do it but have to if they don't get everything right, then it stops being your fault, it's theirs. Bolt cutters can destroy the body. Hope destroys the soul.

The problem with that is the hero is torturing a demon. Though I do like that idea for when the main character goes through torture.

    Torturing a demon?

Demons are creatures of hatred, pain, and vengeance. There's only one way to make something like that scream in fear and agony:

The demons in this are merely resurrected humans. I don't want to use the cliche that their evil (albeit some are) simply because they are being controlled. Some of them are only under orders and want to get away from their leader. Some genuinely believe in what this leader is about. And generally speaking they want to stay out of hell, which is torture.
