British writer, currently roaming around down under...

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Red3, Apr 18, 2016.

    Hello fellow writers.

Thought I would do the polite thing and introduce myself. As you can see from title of the thread, I am British and I've found myself dreadfully lost somewhere in Western Australia, drinking a cup of tea and complaining about the gloomy weather like a true British cliché - you will be please to know, there isn't a single scone or commemorative royal plate in sight, I'm not a complete stereotype.

Pithy intro - check, now lets get down to the crux of why I'm here.

I've been working on a manuscript for a children's book for about... *cough* 4 years *cough-cough* its completed, but there are still things that are brothering me, hopefully I can get some honest feedback from you guys at some point.. I'm also looking forward to reading the work of others and flexing that creative muscle in the art of the short story.

Well, that was a whole 15mins of procrastination! Better get back to the editing.

    See you around folks.

    ;0)

    Welcome, Red!

I'm in awe of people who write children's books because I'm terrified of miniature humans and they seem like an entirely different species. I can't remember how I felt last week let alone what would have appealed to me at 5/8/10 years old.

Where in Blighty are you from?

    Hello Tenderiser

I'm from good ole Hertfordshire, where I worked in a school for several years, before I decided to pack it all in and go travelling around Australia and write, write, write.

Is that the late, great, Rik Mayall you have as your advatar?

Ooh same! I'm near Watford, though I'm from London and still work there.

It is indeed Rik Mayall the inspiration, the legend, the complete B'Stard.

Ah yes, I know Watford. I have "fond" memories of my parents dragging me around Costco while they stocked up on obscene amounts of loo roll and cuts of meat. Small world.

I was lectured by a policeman for snogging in the Costco car park out of hours. He told us to "Find somewhere more appropriate. Like a bed."

Sounds like you had a far better time there then I did. Then again, those Danish pastries. Mmmm.

Welcome! Welcome to the madhouse! :D
I'm Australian too, Sydney, and I'm pleased to meet you! I have agree with @KaTrian isn't it hot and sunny in the centre? That's like the desert area. Since when is it gloomy? Especially compared to England. I'd have thought you'd complain about the mosquitoes or something.

It may well be in the centre, but I'm a long, long way from there, I'm loitering around in the South West corner. It wasn't cold, just grey and very wet.

I was in Sydney a little while ago, loved it down there. I think its been my favourite city so far. I didn't get to go to Luna park though, will have to go again sometime.

I wouldn't bother. Luna Park's not that great. It's fun if you're a kid but...
I would recommend strongly you come to Newtown. Loads of good restaurants. The Dendy has better taste than most cinemas. There's a bunch of good stores to buy stuff. Like T2 which is the BEST store. Oh, and I hear Mardi Gras is fun. I wouldn't know though since I spent the night in the Dendy watching Spotlight (so good).

Hi! I'm a Brit too and, by the sounds of it, living not too far from where you're from :) Such a small world! Can't imagine going to the other side of the world to write (not that I wouldn't love to!), I find it hard enough to get myself and my laptop to the local coffee shop ;)

Don't get me wrong, I really do put the pro in procrastination, but I find travelling really does help with my writing. I was scrapping the bottom of the creativity barrel and seeing a new country, meeting different people and doing things I could never do at home has really help to replenish the barrel. Now, to finish my WIP!

I get the impression from this site most writers are huge procrastinators.
