    Alternate words for 'vicāra'

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by JhanaJunkie, Jul 19, 2016.

The sensation of applied thought or will direct movement, in a particular cases where often a sort of magnetic pull, or catching a current, texture to the action. There is usually a combination of mild effort, then release, and getting pulled into the object.

Other sensations I can thing of related would be that pull when focusing on an object, and you are pulled into it, then propelled out into a larger, expansive space. I'm struggling to locate a proper English equivalent.

There is no one single term in English for this Sanskrit word. You will either have to use an approximate (not the same as equivalent) or you will have to describe it out. This happens all the time between languages. Most famously, the term saudade in Portuguese doesn't have an equivalent in pretty much any other language and to say that it means longing or nostalgia is to diminish the meaning of the original word significantly.

I'm not familiar with the original word, but based on your description of it I can't think of a single word or pre-made phrase that would seem to fit.

Maybe you could use something with magnetism, or fascination, or concentration?

Yes, I hate that about translations, I've seen some English equivalents, but it seems to lose defining nuances. I wasn't sure if it was my inability to grasp the English language, lack of lexicon, or perhaps there really isn't a suitable approximation. I love how languages develop, but this is something I'll have to work out for my target.

    Good suggestions. Thank you.

Great input guys, really helps, especially on the frustration on my end. Thank you.
