Going off a different post I put put up, what can you do when your vocal cords are damaged and you’re basically mute? Can you whisper, hum, make sound when you laugh or cry???? (Etc)
It depends on the damage. I knew a man once who had lost his vocal chords due to cancer and had a whistle in his trachea that he could control enough to speak. This was decades ago; by now, I'm sure they can do better. There are other parts of the mouth, pharynx and nose that can produce sound. In laughter, you might wheeze. Crying, you might gulp or hiccup as well as sob. Whisper, I doubt it; hum, probably. Cough, too.
