So I just got kicked out of this facebook group, which I'm kind of sad about. For an entire week they kept my feed extremely entertaining. Because I got kicked out I can't link anyone to it, but the group name is exactly like it's spelled in the title. It's a closed group, but they'll approve pretty much anyone. In fact that's becoming a problem for them. One of their members posted an anti dinosaur screed on mumsnet.com, it got shared on reddit. The group went from 1200 members to 13,000. The trolls outnumber the christians 11:1. But none have them have been deterred. They also have a blog, http://dinohoax.tumblr.com/where one of their members attempts to disprove the existence of pterosaurs using the flight capabilities of a leather jacket. Trust me, it actually makes less sense when she explains it. But the group is more than worth the time. They use, and defend the use of, phases like "satanic atheist" and "museum industrial complex." And they really mean it!
From the Facebook group: Did anyone else know Jeffery Dahmer and Jim Jones were great dictators and atheists? News to me.
I'm surprised to find out that those 7 men were responsible for all wars as well. I don't want to knock over the Godwin counter, but it seems like there's another person responsible for war on the map here. Someone who might have religious reasons, or at least fought a religious war.
Imperial Japanese history is lost on me, but was Hirohito an Atheist when he basically started the war in the Pacific circa 1936? I'm looking at his Wikipedia article now and it says nothing about what he worshipped.
They do seem to have missed out the Roman, British, and American Leaders. Who knew Jeffery Dahmer was responsible for the American Civil War?
I despair, I really do. If only we could take the name and somehow apply it in the literal sense. You know, like how the Romans would entertain themselves of a Saturday night except instead of lions we'd have dinosaurs.
I know, right? I bet Davis was an Athiest, I'll check. Hrm, interesting. Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America was Episcopalian. Granted he wasn't a dictator, buuuuut...he was a Christian. And while the American Civil War wasn't a religious war, no doubt Davis believed that God would deliver the CSA to victory against the Union. @outsider - Now I have an image of Julius Caesar riding on the back of a T-Rex. Thank you.
He did in the Hollywood version. He also had a bouffant hair do and spoke with a plummy English accent (probably).
Oh most definitely. The movies I remember watching about Caesar (and Rome), everyone spoke with a posh, refined, dignified English accent. I could easily see Peter Cushing dressed as Julius Caesar. He probably did at one point for a movie. Funny, 'cause Rome at the time spoke Latin, and they probably had a different accent.
What really pickles my onion is when you have Romans in films pronounce it 'Sea-sir'. And speak English with the occasional Latin sentence. Directors of the world, stop that, or I'm coming to your house and giving you a stern word!
It's actually a long story, and I wish I had screen shots to back it up. One of their mods made a post about how the group was against prejudice and religious bigotry. I asked her why such a peace loving group was so prejudiced against atheists. The mod (Amy Pavlovich, if you run into her she uses her real name as a mod, and I see no reason to keep her anonymous) said that they had no problem with atheists. I pointed out that another mod was doing an AMA at that moment and that his post contained the phrase "athiot bullshit". Amy asked whether atheist was a religion and I said that it was a religious affiliation recognized by the law of the United State. She then made this post on the wall of the group. A friend saved it for me. I pointed out politely that I'm not an atheist, and that there is a difference between religion and religious affiliation. I politely asked her to take the post down. Amy told me that thought the post was, "righteous and just" and that I had misrepresented myself as an atheist. I told her that I had made it clear I wasn't an atheist, so she was the one doing the misrepresenting. I added that defending atheism does not make one an atheist, any more than defending civil rights makes one black. I again asked her to take the post down, and speculated that, for a group that preaches non hate, she didn't seem to have any problem with lying about her members. At this point another mod started an AMA (this is a common occurrence for some reason, you'll see if you join the group). I asked the new mod, Robyn, why the mods felt it was okay to lie about the group members. Then I couldn't ask any follow up questions because I was banned. I'm told that my comments have disappeared from the thread, which might be true. It's also a possibility that will over 800 comments they have been lost in the churn. The takeaway here is that the mod community of a "Christian" facebook group exhibits all of the Christian attributes of a bunch of vindictive 5th graders. Try to hide your surprise.
If it makes you feel any better, Jack, people have been posting dinosaur porn onto the group since I joined.
The one I saw was a sort of drawn cartoon of a T-rex on top of another T-rex, and the dominant T-rex had an expression like it was ejaculating. It's since been taken down, and there has been a post stating the group is against all porn of all kinds.
Oh don't worry about having been kicked out. Just go over to the Dinosaurs Against Christians page. They'll welcome you. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dinosaurs-Against-Christians/1528181477395175 I stumbled against the Christians Against Dinosaurs page a few months back -- someone on a site had shared something they had posted, and mostly I was amused that such a group even existed. That led me to the other page. I'm kind of troubled, though, that this Christians against dinosaurs movement seems to be gaining traction, and I'm seeing some of their actual grievances emerge into more mainstream media.
Well, it sounds like Jack was being very respectful in their group, which I commend him for. Forming groups like"dinosaurs against Christians," or worse, posting any sort of porn in a Christian Facebook group, strikes me as unnecessarily disrespectful. Liberals ask people to respect certain beliefs (like 14,000 different types of sexuality) that many people find ridiculous, but do not harm anyone. This FB group seems sort of the same. There's really no need for ridicule.
I'm not aware of them posting porn to the Christians page, although I'm not so sure they'd mind, given that the most religious regions have the highest rates of consumption of porn. If they're going to form a ridiculous group to force their views on society (for example, by outlawing the teaching of actual science), it's perfectly reasonable for there to be a group opposed to them.
Of course it's reasonable to have opposition. However, this 'opposition' is joining the CAD group (at will) and going overboard; even without dinosaur porn, it sounds like there are some hostile posts. If people care that much, they should make/join a group that boasts their own beliefs, instead of attacking the homefront of those that don't. The latter makes them look immature and insecure. EDIT for clarity.
I've only joined it to check out what was going on, and some posts have been incredibly critical and condemning of the serious members of the group. Others, actually some more obvious ones, have been actually perfectly reasonable. However, I must be honest but I think trolling has it's place. I am glad people take time out of their day to troll UKIP and Britian First, and while I'm not sure this group entirely deserves it, they are not interested in any other opinion but their own. They've stated that they intend to root out and remove all people who do not agree with them, and that would include me too.
Christians against dinosaurs? But... why...? I was once invited to a group called "Spiders for Life" and it's actually a pro-life group in America. I've forgotten who invited me - it made me wonder if they invited everyone or if they invited me because I'm a Christian and therefore they assumed I'd be in agreement? In any case, I'm not opposed to the existence of these groups - but what's with these ridiculous names...?
