    Your favourite seasonal song/story/poem

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by madhoca, Dec 8, 2009.

Since the festive season is creeping up slowly but surely--even here, in Turkey!--I have a question:

What's your favourite Christmas song / carol / themed-novel, story or poem?

My father always used to play 'God rest ye merry gentlemen' on Christmas Eve so now when I hear it it makes me cry.
Also, like many Brits of my generation Slade's pop song that starts 'Are you hanging up your stockings on the wall...' brings the memories flooding back...

I've always loved the lyrics to Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, and Tori Amos does an incredible version of it so that's a fave. As is Merry Christmas, Baby by James Brown.

Not sure if it counts, but Sleepless In Seattle gets played every Christmas since it's set during...I'm don't know why, but I'm a sucker for that movie. XD

I love Carols Sing ~ Michael W. Smith I just love it...the boys choir is so peaceful.
My favorite Christmas song would be Breath Of Heaven ~ Amy Grant
O Holy Night is my favorite traditional Christmas carol. I have loved it since I was a young child.

My favorite movies during the holidays are Serendipity and Mixed Nuts but The Ref and The Holiday take a close second...and I can't leave out that nasty Grinch, the cartoon, not the movie. :)

The Grinch. I watch every year, hoping he'll win and every year he's thwarted at the last moment. One of these years he'll win, perhaps this year, or the next, or the one after that, but I'll keep watching. And hoping.

People have extended this to movies, and if I may do the same, I have to go with the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of Santa Claus. Close second goes to Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

My favorite Christmas songs are Mary, Did you Know? and Grandma got run over by a reindeer.

I don't have anything against my grandma, so I'm not sure why I love that song so much, but I have for as long as I can remember. My parents call me to tell me to turn on the radio when it plays. That's how much I love it.

I sang that at church one time. I love that song. :)

My favorite Christmas song is God Rest You Merry Gentlemen. Such a pretty melody.

God Rest You Merry Gentlemen is a good one, too.

And I would love to have been there when you sang that, Rob. That was one of my favorite parts about church, all the musical numbers around Christmastime. :)

Carol of the Bells. It's so creepy and yet awesome. I can't help myself, I will listen to this song dozens of times. Also, it helps me write for some reason. Oh yeah, it has to be acapella.

I've just noticed that we haven't come up with any writing, and I'm a bit pushed myself--but I've always loved the bit about Christmas at the start of Little Women!

Lol, I watched "While you were sleeping" just 3 days ago. :p

Uh... books... 'A Christmas Carrol', by Charles Dickens and the movie as well.

For songs... I love 'have yourself a merry little Christmas' and so many other ones... Can't recall all of them.

I'm sure I have the title wrong, but I believe it is called Do You Hear What I Hear.

I'm not religious, but I appreciate the very mythological presentation of the theme.

I was going to post some writing that I like, but I couldn't remember what it was called. I need to look it up.

I love that part, too, by the way. :) That book is great.

Joel and I bought my mom that movie for Christmas this year. I love it!

    Silent night?

I love that song. I learned it in sign language for church once, it was really cool.

When I saw this, I nearly came out of my holiday stockings with happiness....I couldn't believe that someone else loves these movies as much as I do. :D

My favorite holiday tradition around these parts is sitting with a cup of hot chocolate and enjoying some Christmas MST3K with the wife. Though she doesn't get the same level of joy out of it that I do.

The old MST3Ks were the best, but I don't want to say anymore because this isn't the place. As for holiday songs, I've always liked "Angels We Have Heard on High." I always thought it was a beautiful song, and an exceptional song to play in Christmas bands. I miss playing in those groups.

Christmas has always been a very big deal with our family. Christams carols started before halloween. I don't know that I can narrow it down to just one favorite because I love to sing them all.
Favorite poem--- 'Twas the Night Before Christmas

Ah, hiddennovelist, I love "Mary, Did you Know." And Irish87, "Carol of the Bells" is the epitome of coolness. And like Gone Wishing said, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is great. That tune is exactly what a Christmas song should be. You guys took all my favorites already. As for stories, there's a children's book called Humfrey's First Christmas that I love. Slightly cheesy near the end, but the last two sentences are cool, and the early illustrations make me just about scream with laughter.

Oh, one more Christmas song - "Twelve Days of Christmas" as sung by the accapella group Straight No Chaser. They're genius. . . .

    Cheers,

Oh, yes, one of my favorite Christmas books is 'Corduroy's Christmas'. :D It's a kidsbook, yes, but I love it!! (It's a lift-the-flap book )
