I know there isn't one, but I would like to invent one, specifically for a group of elegant desks in a fancy library in an old-fashioned private school. All suggestions gratefully received. Cheers
I would suggest creating a rich description of the desks in your mind, and then likening them to something which already has a collective noun. Then use that noun for the desks. For example, if the desks were strong, powerful and intimidating you could use 'pride' (as in a pride of lions).
Thinking more about this, I think it would work better if you combined the collective noun with an adjective to make it clear why you used it. So, something like: A pride of stately desks A gaggle of spindly-legged desks A herd of solidly built desks A flock of ornate desks
Ooh that's a good one. Using "regiment" implies something about the way they are structured or set out. Taking this idea further, you could use other nouns to imply other arrangements, such as 'cluster'.
Thanks again, folks. Great suggestions! My placeholder for this is a cluster of desks because I imagined them in a little group rather than arranged neatly in rows. I didn't mention that before because I didn't want to colour anyone's thoughts. Anyway, there's a whole bunch of stuff happening in my old-fashioned school, so I'll have ample opportunity to squeeze in some of the expressions above. Cheers m'dears!
