    Comma Question

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by jakeybum, Jun 18, 2017.

Do you agree with my insertion and omission of the comma in my two examples below based on my explanations in brackets? Am I correct on both counts?

    (1) The 6-ft. 2-in., 235-pound juggernaut from South Carolina put on a stellar performance.

[Comma is inserted after "in." to separate two adjectives before a noun.]

    (2) The 6-ft. 2-in. 235-pounder from South Carolina put on a stellar performance.
[No comma after "in.," because a comma is not inserted between a compound adjective and a compound noun.]

    Thank you.

You can write 6 foot 5, 235 lb man and be fine... that's how sports writers in the US do it.

I deal with measurements for my work.

You can use ' for feet (Example, 6 feet = 6')

You can use " for inches (Example, 6 inches = 6")

    6'-6" = 6 foot -6 inches.
