I'll never understand why males get piercings. Nothing against it, I just can't relate.

I got one when I was young, and I'm good for life.

Is it about the same thing, then?

I always thought, for some people anyway, especially if it's piecrings on the face, that they want to show the world how damaged they are inside. As within, so without so to speak. Like they're marking themselves as belonging to a particular tribe that's not like the average people. It originated from Punk culture, and they were definitely trying to make themselves stand out as different and damaged. But it also became quite the big fashion statement in the 90s, so who knows?

I wonder... With piercing and tattoos, those that imbibe, will say, it's to express my individuality, but it seems to me, it's more of a follower's game.

Male US Marines aren't allowed to have piercings. Pre-existing holes are okay, but they aren't allowed to wear the jewelry on-duty, off-duty, or while on leave (although that last one is hard to enforce). As a result, many guys of my generation would go to the mall and get an ear piercing on their last day, as soon as they'd gotten their discharge papers.

Rite of passage back into bodily autonomy.

I originally got my ears pierced because I like earrings and the clip ones pinched. Years later I had an extra hole put in one ear lobe because I like asymmetry.

A quarter of a century ago when piercings and tattoos first started to become mainstream, I was sitting in a group of twenty-somethings who were showing off their ink and piercings and bragging about how much pain they could take. They looked over at me, no tats, a single hole in each ear, and sneered. I smiled, said, "I had two ten and a half pound babies via natural childbirth. I have nothing to prove about how much pain I can take." End of conversation.

After my time, but as far as I know, the subject never came up in my day (not that many years after Iain).

No longer much a sign of rebellion for the newer gen, which is interesting.

Yeah goths and metal heads come to mind as the one end of that spectrum. Maybe a mix of expression and trying to externalize suffering so it's more tangible. A workaholic or gymmaster could be trying to cope with the same feelings but working through it differently.

Internet research has a much higher garbage potential. Books are vetted at least, to one degree or another, while any jabroni with a Wi-Fi connection can post something on the internet. Not that there aren't many credible online sources, but nobody's watching any of that shit.

I run into pay-for scientific articles all the time doing research. Fortunately, I work for a college with a library account for many journals, so I call the research librarian, tell her want I want, and poof! it arrives in my email.

I love research librarians even better than I love all librarians. :read:

    haha! Yes.

If you eat 10 times what a normal person would eat, isn't the implication that there will be another 10 times event happening soon? The whole situation is revolting.

I am presently kicking the tires on hosting an eating contest at one of my restaurants. I have philosphical (and digestive) misgivings, but the publicity potential might be too seductive to pass up. At this particular spot, I don't have the marketing budget or rep to compete with the rest of the neighborhood. And with festival and street event season coming up, well, if 20k pedestrians are going to be walking by, sometimes you have to do dumb shit to get noticed.

    Dude, competitive shitting!

Are we talking just weight lost on the throne, or will there be sub-competitions for consistency, aroma, and... distance, hippo style?!?!?!

I'd buy that for a dollar!

A true skeptic will doubt his own existence and go into some kind of bizarre solipsistic nihilism.
