What could my antagonist use to hide his eyes?

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Youniquee, Mar 15, 2011.

Don't say sunglasses please, it doesn't really suit his 'look' I have in mind. A classy/mysterious look. It is important to the plot for him to hide his eyes.
    Thanks for the help.

Some kind of hat, pulled low over his eyes? Don't know what era he's in, or what genre?

    I should have mentioned that...
Fantasy, semi modern day? How do i explain it. The city has like olden time houses but has modern day clubs, bars and clubs.
I'm thinking about having sunglasses (lol but you just said...)but he pretends is blind so he also carries cane. Does that work?

This is probably super corny but what about an eye patch, like the kind stereotypical pirates use? Basically he pretends to have no eye? And then he has some kind of cloudy spectacle that covers the other eye.

Well, as someone already mentioned, some type of hat or cap. It doesn't matter what culture or time period it is, there is always some variation of a hat. Helmets if the MC is in the military or something similar.

A hood would work if the weather is constantly rainy, windy, or snowy. Or instead of the hood, a scarf worn around his head and covering most of his eyes would work for a similar climate.

If he has long hair, he could always comb it over his eyes for the street urchin look. :D

You can only have one emo fringe y'know?
    Considering I said eyes :p
lol...You guys aren't being serious are you?
@Ellipse, thanks for the idea. The hood one stands out, considering it is always snowing there. But the thing is, he's an higher up (government type in a country for exiles) and I doubt anyone would trust him if he was always wearing a hood.
@Mallory lol that kinda looks creepy. He is kinda young but i think the glasses would make him look weak. Thanks anyway :)

You could use a hood, or hat as the others have mentioned. Also, you could simply have him have his eyes closed. Since it's fantasy, maybe he wouldn't need sight to know what he's doing?

something to cover his eyes, well whatever it is it will need to be see through, therefore tinted glasses is the only thing I can think of. or maybe some form of mask.

He could wear a metal fire bucket on his head.

If he can fake being blind, you could tie a band of silk around his eyes.

You can go the route of Gin from the anime/manga bleach. Just have his eyes closed/squinting to the point you can't see his eyes.

Of course you could just give him long hair and have his eyes covered by the hair. I had a friend in like middle school who grew out his hair and would mess with his hair so that his eyes would be covered.

Scary Shiny Glasses is a route you can go which would fit the classy route without it being sunglasses and it'll fit the classy look as well. The other suggestion already mention I think works well is hat.

Long hair, NOT an emo fringe...
The character could keep themselves sideways, avoiding direct eye contact... That action could add to the mystery.

Use the submarine principle: two mirrors - so he can see around a corner

If all else fails, have him wear a cape made of live puppies. No one will bother to look at his eyes. :D

Why is he hiding his eyes? Is it to be mysterious, or is there something abnormal about them?

If it's the former, then I'd agree with having either a sweatshirt with a hood; or if he's the more classy type, a long coat with the collar turned up and one of those hats that FBI agents wore in the 50s during the Cold War. Nothing else begs "mysterious" quite like that.

If it's the latter and he's trying to disguise a strange feature about his eyes, then that would be a bit more difficult. Do contact lenses exist in your world? If so, he could get a special pair that changes the color of his eyes, or the shape of his pupil.

What if he wears a sweatshirt with a large hood? That would keep his eyes out of sight. Or even a baseball cap. Granted, he'd need to keep his head low, but it's a possibility.

Since he's pretending to be blind, this wouldn't really work but if he wanted to cover his eyes and make them look different then what about color contacts. Like white out or black out? Or just a different color/dark color/color that doesn't stand out much.
I don't think this really works for your case but it would be sort of cool.
And I'm taking this completely seriously :)
Normal fringe bangs could work, although they are more popular on girls. I do have a friend who has hair that covers both of HIS eyes. And it's no necessarily emo fringe.
    Does this help?

You could combine some of these with a monocle. Monocles are cool.

If you're not going with glasses, I think going towards the direction of a hood or cap/hat is your best bet.

I've decided he'll have sunglasses and a cane, it works best with his character too.
Sadly, colour contacts don't exist in that world lol
but thanks everyone for the answers.
