    allo friend

    Allo friends,

About me, shall we say that I am me, myself, and only I, except perhaps when I am other than that.

You see I'm Sam, I love to write, I love to read too but am terribly picky, it takes a bit to get me to look at a new author, if I like them I read all they have, if I don't, the first book goes in the pile and never is seen again.

I was told unfortunately that I've a gift for writing, and should seriously look into something more. Sadly this puts a pressure that nobody needs, when first I write here, and say whoa my friends, read these words and verses tell me with pure heart what you see. What do I do when I hear, Bah this is rubbish its crap I see not why you waste my time on these simple words. And then I crawl back into the dark and write no more. But as such I love to write and have often imagined I have a story to share I've yet to find it but its there. So I am here.

I know places I lack, dialogue for one, I'm terrible with it and need to hone it if I wish to ever make something more than a few pages long. I cannot say I dream of publishing, I do love to write and while I'd enjoy writing for the masses I think by and large I am more intimate than that.

So I come here to seek a bit of a shelter where I can find feedback on my words that come from sources that have no investment in me as a person that I might find an unconstrained hand to criticize what I might write. To find resources that others have gone before and found were helpful. And perhaps a place to come and make new friends, new acquaintances in a subject that I find few relate to in life.

I am Sam, and I am here.

'Allo Sam, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

I may take you up on that Castle.

Truly dialogue is a weak point for me, what I put to words is the image in my head, its moving and dynamic, and I can get lost in details at time, but images don't come with words, I see the movement the "action" if you will, and no I don't mean explosions and battles though that too. Where I stumble is dialogue.

    I'm working on it.

I'm busily perusing the forums I'll eventually make my way to the critique area, and eventually I'll write something up to post, and shall begin another step on my long journey.
