sure, it's ok to do your own thing... when it's for you, only! but if you want to get your work published and sold to the reading public, you'll maximize your chances, if you hew to the standards of the day, instead of doing what most people won't read and won't buy...
It's creative license. There simply are no rules as long as you stay true to your form. Of course, that doesn't mean it's necessarily easy reading for others. Given the arduous path a book takes from manuscript to publishing, plenty of people found that author's style perfectly functional. It likely adds a great deal of flair to the voice as well.
Creative license may not be honored in other jurisdictions, for instance in the office of your prospective publisher. Better to obey the Uniform Traffic Code. Of course, creative license is fine if you're only tootling around in your own district of web sites and handing copies around to friends.
In my opinion it's best to never do anything even a little bit different from everyone else. It's much better to be regular and do normal stuff.
