Does this horror scare tactic exist?

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by Keongxi, Aug 9, 2022.

People usually say avoid writing/typing out a scare moment where the audience/reader can anticipate the scare coming. But have there been instances where the writer intentionally sets up the scare scene so that the audience/reader CAN expect the scare and still be frightened anyway?
If yes, please state on your opinions on it. Thank you.

Think of it as baiting the hook.

In almost every horror movie there’s a scene where everyone screams don’t go in the basement, or don’t open that door. Priming the reader to anticipate something coming, keeping the reader on edge is how it’s done, it’s building suspense. The trick is to not telegraph what’s coming.
