    This always happens...

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Emerald, Oct 13, 2008.

... I end up on writing sites, spending hours and hours NOT writing.

Anyway. I'm not sure how I should introduce myself. I suppose you ought to know I can be rather inconsistent. Sometimes I've got a goofy, light-hearted sense of humour, other times it's ironic and satirical. Right now, I'm kind of distant and bemused. For some bizarre reason my inner voice currently sounds like an upper-class Brit.

I'm from Dublin. Got a strong interest in psychology, and people in general (Heh, kind of telling, the way I introduce my personality first, isn't it?) and I tend to write in a more character-centric style.

I enjoy most genres, but one thing I hate is when people are unoriginal. I don't mean every single aspect of a story should be totally fresh and original, but there are certain things the world does not need any more of.

I'm usually an honest reviewer. Unless the writer in question is very connected, or hot...

    Colorado, eh?

Tell me, is there such a place as South Park?

Hello Emerald, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Inconsistent, aye? Like real people, p'raps?

Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Perhaps. But unlike most people, my consistency is reflected strongly by what I write. And right now I'm quite viscous. In my consistency. Geddit? Hah!

Although it's probably a writer thing, in which case it's probably common among you folk. I mean I haven't slept in a looong time, but my grammar and punctuation and syntax and structure is virtually perfect. Not to mention spelling. Don't mention spelling. My spelling is unmentionable. In a good way. It is perfection embodied by... disembodied, virtual information stored on a server and transmitted to your computer screen over... wires. Like snakes slithering around, whispering into your computer's ear. Except not in the deceptive way that popular media portrays. Stereotypes are never true. Except ones about British people. Those are all true. But the rest are all lies, invented by the British... to subvert the masses. They want their empire back! You can see it in their eyes...

    Welcome to WF.
You best be careful this site is known for really terrible things to happen.
This time a raid of escaped ham sandwiches have been eating our members.
Be careful the mustard is a trap.
But I should stop scaring you, I'm Leaka.
    Welcome once again.
