    Horror writers-do you use buzzwords?

Discussion in 'Horror' started by feather, May 15, 2008.

In 'How to Write Tales of Horror, Fantasy and Science Fiction', Ray Bradbury spoke about buzzwords. He would jot down nouns that scared him. 'The Basement' etc.
Do you have buzzwords? If so, what are your top 10?

    Mine:

    1. The Basement
    2. The Attic
    3. The Dark
    4. Eyeballs
    5. Ladybugs(don't even ask for an explanation):)
    6. Insanity
    7. Drowning
    8. Death by fire
    9. An unknown stalker ( very creepy )
    10. Snakes
These are in no particular order.

I've never encountered this before, to be honest... But each to their own, and whatever helps you. I might try this, the next time I write horror.

kind of done something similar in my notebook at the ideas stage. Didn't write a list though but there are just random words and phrases written without any context throughout just because i thought they would help with certain descriptions later on.

I think its an ok idea - I often look through the notebook when i'm writing and rediscover something i had forgotten about

I've never thought about this before specifically, but my knee-jerk reactions would have to be:

    Senselessness
    Cruelty
    Vampire
    Bee
    Besieged
    Candy
    Paralysis
    Madness
    Mechanical
    Bones

The word revenant scares me. Pieces, lost, new friend, help, silence, suffocate, smiles, creak, scrape, slowly, groan, yelp, wince, cower, sense, careful, casually, etc.....
    Great Site!!!!!! Thanks
