You beat me to it. The announcement was in my e-mail Inbox when I arrived home from work today. Like you, I'm not sure if this will be good or bad for us. Fasten your seat belts and hang on for the ride.
Less choice is a bad thing generally but on the other hand smash words was a spent force anyway the problem is it leave draft to digital without a serious competitor. Ingram suck as an aggregator publish drive are the other contender but they charge on a subscription model which is more affordable for an established author but sucks badly for those starting out
