One hundred percent. Alcohol doesn’t help me with my creativity because I just want to dance around or watch a film with a candle on for ambience.
I believe slight inebriation can free up the brain, but go too far and you'll write gibberish. I think I'll try writing my next poem pissed.
I get a little less self conscious after drinking a bit of alcohol, so a very small dose actually works for me.
Hemingway didn't actually drink while writing. Pretty much any other time, sure, but most evidence says that while he was working he kept away from the stuff. I agree, cocaine is way better for writing.
Personally, I find a wee dram helps when I'm trying to break through a block or to brainstorm something. For general writing, it's an impediment as I find myself being too verbose and not keeping things tight. Tracking what 5 or 6 characters are doing in a scene is a serious mental drain and I need my wits around for that. Drugs are not generally helpful as I can attest to because I'm currently on painkillers and my productivity has plummeted.
Okay, let's test the theory. https://www.writingforums.org/threads/to-be-a-man.159601/ wrote this half a six pack down with this thread in mind. I also wrote it as an experiment to answer the question "What the hell is wrong with my stories in general?" the quest goes on.
