    Forgo the comma separators?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by victo, Jun 3, 2015.

The six-foot, five-inch, two-hundred-and-twenty-pounder, from Amarillo, Texas, dominated the gridiron.

Do I need a comma after "pounder" above?

    Thank you.

It depends on whether or not "from Amarillo, Texas" functions as an aside (think of putting that phrase in parentheses). If it does, then you need a comma. If not, then no comma is needed.

So it really doesn't matter. Great. But I definitely need one after 'Texas', even if there isn't one after 'pounder', correct?

Are all of the other commas okay (in the right places)? Thanks a lot.

Incidentally, 6-5 & 220 pounds would make him an impressively built athlete, but "dominate the gridiron"? The Refridgerator (William Perry) was 6-2 and 335 pounds. Now HE dominated the gridiron!

You might consider using "six-foot-five" to make it a little more concise. And yeah, no comma needed after 'pounder'.
