So the story I am writing is a thriller with a political conspiracy set in NYC that revolves around the "suicide" of a government official. The only issue is the main character (who uncovers the plot) is jobless lol I don't know if he should be A) A political fixer (kinda like Olivia Pope but more realistic) B) A District Attorney C) A political aide in the NYC Government I want it to be as realistic as possible, I'm not sure what job best fits the outcome of the plot (that he uncovers a vast conspiracy and is hunted down) Any suggestions?
Have you seen Conspiracy Theory, with Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts? Mel's character is a conspiracy theorist taxi driver, and Rorbert's is an FBI agent that kinda helps him out. Another good one would be Enemy of the State, with Gene Hackman and Will Smith. This one is a bit closer to what you are talking about in terms. Both movies are really good at depicting the types of scenario you are looking at, and may give you some ideas. Plus you can try to make heads or tails of all the youtube conspiracy theorists, to see if you can possibly make any of their theories of use to get things moving in your story. In the least you may find them to be a kind of 'research' into how such people think. Hope this helps you out a smidgen, and good luck.

The profession which would enable your MC to uncover the real story behind the suicide would likely depend on what kind of government official has "killed" him or herself. A little more information on the coverup aspect of your plot would be helpful in giving answers. Also, as Cave Troll suggests, there are always ways around obstacles with periphery characters.
The character that has committed “suicide” is an official in the NYC Mayor’s Office in charge of overseeing real estate deal involving the city. When he is found dead a number of corrupt shenanigans involving a secret group that controls the city is uncovered by the MC who is tasked to look into the death by the same “secret group” with a promise of higher office and money. Basically the MC turns on his handlers to expose them, thus why his job needs to afford him some kind of access to uncover such things.
Okay, so...two questions: 1. Is this secret group operating within the realm of real estate? If so, you have your answer: real estate attorney. The path to public office is often walked along the lines of work in the field of law. 2. Why would the secret group hire someone to look into it? If it's a faked suicide, you'd think they'd be doing everything in their power to stop people from looking into it. That's the whole purpose of a coverup, right?
There in lies the plot twist, the MC believes it’s a suicide and is told by the “secret group” that the Mayor’s enemies are trying to use the death for political gain. They need as much information as possible to prevent the Mayor from getting framed. The MC realizes midway into the plot that the cover up is going to be pinned on him. That he is a pasty of the “secret group” which he didn’t know in the beginning was so evil. The “secret group” consists of a high powered Attorney connected to the city, the Mayor and a Billionaire tycoon who is involved in real estate among other things.
