    Echidna?

Discussion in 'Setting Development' started by Adam Bolander, Nov 13, 2020.

In one of my projects, I have a big magical thing that turns people into monsters known as chimera. I kind of want to name this thing Echidna. In Greek mythology, Echidna was the wife of Typhon and mother to the chimera.

Unfortunately, more people are familiar with this kind of echidna:

What do you think? Should I go with it or think of a different name?

I hate to say it, but I think you are correct in your assessment. You can explain to me all day long where the name actually comes from, I'm still gonna' see the little lady pictured above.

maybe you can change the spelling of it?

if not, go with another iteration of it. Echidna is half woman, half snake. So is a "Naga" which are Hindu half person half cobras.

or if you want to stick with chimeras, you can go with Typhon- the father of chimeras
or other chimeric figures of myth, like Geryon.

Echidna has 2 tails and looks like the Starbucks lady. the Starbucks lady is a Melusine. so theres another option

Think of a different name. It's a fantasy. Be original.

    Hi,

As I see it you've got a couple of options. If you were sticking directly to Greek mythos I'd stay with Echidna since it's accurate. But you don't seem to be. So either you use the name and have to explain upfront that she isn't the actual monster mother of greek mythos or a marsupial, or you come up with something else. Maybe a name that references / sounds like Echidna? Eg Mama Echi?

    Cheers, Greg.

    I'm inclined to agree.
