    'ello everyone

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by lightfromshadow, Jan 18, 2009.

Found this forum through Google while looking for a place to get opinion's about my writing.

I've had a fictional story in my head for (come May) 3 years now, and am finally trying to write it down... Though it's hard to stay focused with all the distractions everywhere.
(I've got 2 scenes I'm working on, and Really would like to hear what y'all think about them)

Additionally, I write poetry whenever I have the inspiration. They normally come from what's going on at the moment, and so mean a great deal to me.
I would like to hear what y'all have to say about those as well.

Looking forward to the help, and hopefully can give out just as good advice to others.

Hello Light, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

I have to admit that was how I found this place, and a main reason for joining.

However, when I tried to submit something (before your reply), I saw what you were talking about.
I read up on it, and completely agree with the reasoning for it.

It truly can do that, much like reading many books by authors who use great grammar and a large vocabulary. It can change the way you look at sentences or expand your choice of words, respectively. That in turn makes us (as in authors, poets, and whatever else I'm missing) better writers in a way we would not have been except for after reading them.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, and your reply.

    Thanks Jack =)

I think I'm really starting to like this forum.

I am honored to be able to review submissions from such great writers. As well as submitting my own material, knowing that those same writers will be reviewing mine as well.
However, I believe this forum can get even better. I will post a thought about how I think it can improve soon. If it is already there, then I may add my "two cents."
Thanks to the admin/moderators/etc. for such a great forum.
Thanks to everyone else as well for posting, your advice, and the reviews.

    God bless y'all, everyone.
