How do you show a letter?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by GuardianWynn, Nov 20, 2015.

So, if a character is reading a letter or a page of a book. How do you show that? Some people recommend Italics for it. Which I suppose would be a fairly distinct way to express it. But are there any other common ways? Is just changing the font enough?

Since it is in, my cases, sort of long(400 words and up.) Figured there might be more a standard way to show it.

In the series Sweep, many chapters started with a journal entry. They could be upwards of 1000 words long, and she always wrote them in italics. Another way I've seen is to adjust the indenting or formatting, by pulling the words in so that the edges of the paragraphs aren't in line with the rest of the story. But those are the only two ways I've seen.

Use a block quote. See the section on "Long quotations" here.

I agree with using a block quote.
