    Books of Sapphics?

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by Cadavar, Jan 21, 2015.

Could anybody out there share with me a few titles of books containing only modern Sapphic poems?

The style of poem, or poems using the stanza containing a meter that uses torchees, dactyls and Adonics.

Wow is that specific. I'm sorry, I'm finding it hard to come up with any names. Maybe certain translations of Theocritus, but honestly, I'm not sure I can think of any originally English collections that would interest you.

You may want to look at Rachel Wetzsteon's poems.

I'm not come across any books comprising entirely Sapphics, but Finch and Olivier's recent Measure for Measure: An anthology of poetic meters is an excellent anthology in which poems are organised by metre. It has a chapter of modern English poems written in Saphhics (11 poems) and Alcaics (6 poems), and also a chapter that includes poems in hendecasyllabics (7 poems). Not quite a whole book, but a nice selection. Plus you are very likely to find the rest of the anthology interesting too.
