From Pratchett: all members of the Night Watch in Guards! Guards!, Lord Vetinari, Rincewind and Death. Boromir, Faramir, Aragorn, Merry and Pippin from LOTR. Never liked Eowyn too much, she fell in love and immediately settled down. Malta, Ronica and Keffria Vestrit from the Liveship Trilogy by Robin Hobb, though Malta is my favourite of the three. Valerius, Cunobelin, Corvus and Cunomar from the Boudica series by Manda Scott. Lily from Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. There are many more, I just can't think of them at the moment.
Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. He is very commuted and knowledgeable about what everyone is wearing (what designer suit, shoes, glasses, where they got their haircut). I just like that he is a serial killer, but he takes his style very very seriously.
Bean from Ender's Shadow. Arya Stark from the Song of Ice and Fire series. These two youngin's are awesome!
From ASOIAF, I'd have to say Jon, Arya, Sansa, Tyrion and Daenerys are all holding strong at my favorite spots (and they're all still alive, too - I refuse to accept Jon's not coming back).
there are too many to list from ASoIaF and Malazan. Yossarian from Catch 22 Siimon from The Lord of Flies Boxer from Animal Farm Winston from 1984 Montag from Fahrenheit 451
I'm always a sucker for anti-heroes. The characters you think are evil SOB's, but when push comes to shove, they end up saving the day. I also like the bad-guys-turned-good because they usually retain much of their charmingly wicked tendencies without being truly evil. Like Sabine the Queen of Illusions from Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series. I thought she was rather endearing, especially toward the end when you see her redeeming qualities shine through. She's a shameless thief, but she's also courageous and loyal to a fault.
You made me chortle into my tea. Also, I totally had a crush on Ax. My ultimate favorite character is Yossarian from Catch 22. He's insane, but then eventually you realize he is actually the lone rational person in insane circumstance.
Salieri from Amadeus has always chilled me with how much I can relate to his feelings of mediocrity and jealousy.
There's a character called George Hazard in John Jakes North and South trilogy, I just adore him and can picture him so clearly whenever I read those books.
Ragnar Blackmane from the Space Wolf series, Max from the Maximum Ride series, Holo from Spice and Wolf and finally L, Light and Ryuk from Death Note. I loved the final three in both the series and the manga. ^.^
Wow, great to see someone revive this thread. I last contributed to it two years ago. I still would say all of the characters I named back then, but I would have to add: Earnest Pettigrew from Major Pettigrew's Last Stand Javier Lopez Angulo from Welcome to Havana, Senior Hemingway Maddie Quimper from Michener's Texas Juno, from the film of the same name
For some reason, nobody has mentioned Robert Heinlein's Lazarus Long. He's one of the greatest and most memorable characters in science fiction history.
There many that I like but these two ladies are my favorites: Dina from Dina's Book Isbjörg from Jag heter Ísbjörg, jag är ett lejon
Brangoon and Sarobrando, from the Redwall Book: Loamhedge. I love the way the characters flow together.
Brod is one of the characters in Everything is Illuminated, a jewish orphan girl growing up in a Ukrainian village in the 1800s. While I generally dislike the verbose, pretentious book, Brod's story haunts me like an ex-lover.
John Constantine from Hellblazer (DC/Vertigo comics) is my number one. This is because I see him sort of like the dark side of humans. That desire that's in us all to drive our lives right into the ground. He solves his problems well enough but even then they are never truly settled and he ends up hurting his friends or loved ones in the process (sometimes even on purpose) He's not a good person but he tries to do good with sometimes less then wonderful results. He's the most human comic character I've ever read Though plenty of people are running close behind Constantine. Chrstopher Shouldered, Elmer Albatross and Graham Spector from Baccano! (and I admire other characters that belong to the world as well) Daredevil from Marvel (What other DD would there be?) Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho Shiki Ryougi, Archer, Rider and about three other characters I don't feel like writing down from the Nasuverse Gentleman Johnny Marcone and Harry Dresden from The Dresden Files .......................................I really have a lot of favorite characters. I wasn't even naming video game characters and I have yet to name all the manga characters I like. I'll come back later
The Lakota Sioux character Charging Elk, from James Welch's fantastic novel The Heartsong of Charging Elk —a novel published in 2000 about a Native American who falls ill in Marseilles during a tour of Wild Bill Hickok's troupe at the end of the 19th century. Charging Elk gets left behind with no money, no identity, unable to speak French or much English at all, and has to make his way in an entirely new world. Unforgettable character AND story.
YES!!!! God YES! I am such a nerd for Dresden! Will it seem less-manly if I say that I love Toot-Toot and am rooting for him to grow into a full Sidhe? Probably....
Dante Alighieri is the best detective you can imagne. He is not a classic like a Holmes, but he has his own metodes and he is great.
Some of my favourites, by no means all, are Milady Winter from 'Three Musketeers', Jane Eyre and Sherlock Holmes.
