    I need a good laugh

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by Leatherworth Featherfist, May 11, 2011.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good fictional humor book?

I've read all of Christopher Moore's books so that's out the door, and I'm also familiar with most of David Sedaris' books as well.

If there's any books that you find comical, let me know.

Also let me know if you think a book is comical because it's awful. I am interested in bad literature; it helps give me some perspective, and it also gives me ideas for parody and sarcasm.

    Thanks.

    Yes, yes I do.

PG Wodehouse..you can't go wrong with any of the Jeeves' books (I suppose it might help if you're an Anglophile but good taste should be sufficient.. a tautology, I fancy..)

    JKT's A Confederacy of Dunces

Joseph Heller's As Good As Gold

One of the funniest and down-right best satirical books I have read from this decade:

I am America and So Can You by Stephen Colbert.

Seriously, one of the funniest books that is pure, pure entertainment. I was laughing just from reading the cover, copyright information... all the way to the very end. It's hilarious.

It's all based on Stephen Colbert's persona on the Colbert report, and is pretty much fiction. Colbert pokes fun at everything and anything under the sun. I mean, nothing is left untouched that you might even find yourself getting offended, and when you do, he'll make fun of you for being offended. It's hilarious.

If you're just looking for a pure laugh, this is it.

Well if you haven't read Hitchhiker's Guide, that's always good for a laugh, great book. (I've been talking about that book a lot on this site, I realize. But I happen to really like it LOL).
This one is non-fiction, but it's a highly entertaining, VERY funny travelogue written with wit and sarcasm, called The Sex Lives of Cannibals. I highly recommend.

Oh gosh, you totally beat me to it. I highly recommend that as well, and I also recommend America: The Book and Earth: The Book by the writers of The Daily Show.

The absolute funniest writer I've ever read is Pat McManus. I like his earlier books better than his newer ones. This one's as good as any to start with: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0805000321/?tag=postedlinks04-20

    Yes Man by Danny Wallace

It's travel writing rather than fiction but it is well worth reading as it is so funny.
