    Fictitious pop band memoir?

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by OurJud, Aug 22, 2020.

I’ve asked this before but it was a while ago and I’ll never settle until I hunt it down. I need help finding a book I once read.

I read it maybe a decade ago and it’s a fictitious account of a British indie band from the 80s (maybe the 90s). I pictured this band being similar to Joy Division and the like. Anyway it starts in present day with this guy on a beach in Spain, with his wife and kid. He starts telling the reader about a pop band he formed back in the 80s/90s and the whole book then becomes one long flashback to this time.

It captured the time brilliantly and one scene I remember vividly is him designing a sleeve for the band’s demo cassette, and taking it to the library to run off a few copies on their photocopier.

    I’m afraid that’s all I can remember.

    Thanks in advance.

It was. It captured the time perfectly. I’ve been trying to identify it for years now!

Might help. Off the top of my head....(did I already say this in the other thread?) it sounds like you could be referring to the movie: "The Commitments" or the Canadian tv show, "Catwalk" (Neve Campbell was "Daisy" in this series before she joined the "Party of Five" tv show).

No, it's not that, but thanks.
Yes, I remember you saying this last time. I've tried a 'What's that book?' reddit sub with no joy. I shall try the one you link to. Thanks.

    The Cocksure Lads?

It's a 2013 comedy drama - movie - starring Lyndon Ogbourne, Luke Marty Edward Hilier, Adam McNab.

It's the only thing I've seen that could fit....

No, but thanks for having a shot. This band were from the 80s.

I’ve been searching for this book ever since I asked for help the last time - which was a number of years ago now. I don’t think I’m ever going to find it.

I tried to find it for ya since I think I'd like it.

    Some of these sound similar:

    https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/books/books-with-a-beat-a-top-10-of-novels-that-rock-1.2339295

However, after some digging I found none of them matched the details you mentioned.

Starting with Spain and British band and what else... is it the 80s or 90s? That's quite a different music scene wise.
