Hi. Never, ever signed up to a forum of any kind before so excuse me if I make any errors. I became ill through PTSD five years ago. Last year I decided to write a book about my trauma in order to help me understand and in some way deal with it. I have struggled with my book, going over and over each chapter while making sure that it's true to my word. I have also struggled with grammar. Hoping I can find like minded people on here who can continue to instill the confidence in me to continue writing. 92,000 words to date and climbing.
Hey there, Peter. Welcome. I'm sorry to hear about your trauma, and I hope getting it on paper has been helpful. I'll give it a read when you post it.
Hi Peter welcome - I'd just note that if you've used your real name as your user ID, that isn't always a great idea. If you want you can change it your first fourteen days by contacting our admin Komposten
Hi there. Yes, it's definitely helped. Sometimes, when I read back over the chapters, it makes me realise how bad the situation really was. I'm on my second draft now so just one more round of fixes and it should be complete. Thank you.
Hi Thank you so much for letting me know. It's my real first name but I changed the surname just in case. Thank you.
cool that sounds sensible ... you might want to check out the new members start guide if you havent already https://www.writingforums.org/threads/new-member-quick-start-guide.132102/ and if you have any queries feel free to contact any of the staff
Hi Thank you so much for your comment. It's so difficult getting people to read what you write. I'm definitely getting better. Just going back over my old writing, I am like "did I really like that". I cheekily submitted a couple of chapters to a well known author. Never expected a reply and several months later, there it was in my inbox. She requested I find a literary agent saying it was gritty and a deeply disturbing read. I am not sure if I should do that now or completely finish the book first?
That's why the system here makes so much sense. There's a quid pro quo to it that keeps the critique as active and thoughtful as it would be in a face-to-face workshop. I'm probably the wrong person to ask, but I'd just go ahead and send it around. They probably only want the first few chapters, anyway. Of course, those kinds of questions are better directed to the "Publishing" subforum.
