Unsure if this should go here, but if there was a character who was winged, and they had to carry another person a long distance, how would they go about doing that? Character is strong, but I think it is pushing it to say that he could carry another human for like a straight day of flight without his arms getting tired.
It depends on the size of the wings, the local gravity, the air density, and so on. An albatross has up to a 15 foot (almost 5 m) wingspan, but weigh less than 30 pounds. Pteranadons may have weighed as much as 200 pounds (90 kg) but had 8 meter (26 foot) wingspans. If all your human has to rely on is the aerodynamically-generated lift from their wings and you're on an Earth-like planet, and the wings are of a manageable size, they probably can't even lift their own weight, much less someone else.
They aren't like sparrow wings. I'm not terribly concerned about getting too scientific about it. I don't plan to detail the exact wingspan aside from referring to it as massive or otherwise generic terms. It's a fantasy novel, sort of a dragon hybrid situation. I just want to know what would be the best way to carry someone, assuming that their wings are large enough. I think I'm just going to go with some kind of strap situation so that they are harnessed to the front of the torso.
Look at tandem parachute rigs, it's a somewhat similar concept. Also, ask parents how big their kids are when "upsies" become impossible.
He could drive part of the journey and fly the end section. Or hire a tandem bicycle with the other character, the MC flapping his/her wings for air portions, or the aerial, the 'Hold on tight my friend and don't pull the brakes,' in their dialogue.
I considered that, but the mechanism of the movements and the placement got me. I wasn't sure how everything would line up and if it would be feasible.
The wings would have to be set wide enough on the shoulders to allow for movement. I like the way the wing joints are shown here. You could get arms around the shoulders and legs around the waist.
Since it's fantasy, there's no reason to think your winged person couldn't carry someone in there arms for as long as needed, by whatever means you wish. Like a cat carrying a kitten, if you like.
