    Grammar question

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by writerdude11, Apr 4, 2013.

In the following dialogue, was it right to put a comma after the first experession since there was dialogue to follow?. If anybody can clarify I'd greatly appreciate it, thanks.

"Well, I'm gonna propose to YOU now,(?)" Chance said getting down on one knee and looking up at Emilio. "Babe, after all we've been through, do you STILL wanna marry me?" Chance asked. Emilio began to cry softly.

Yes, the comma is correct in this instance. You've attached a tag to the dialogue, and together they form one sentence. Without the tag you could have, for example:

"Well, I'm gonna propose to you now." Chance got to one knee.....etc

    john's right...

and it has nothing to do with more dialog following the first bit, because they're not a single sentence that's been interrupted by the dialog tag, but two separate sentences...
