I would say that you should use whatever program works best for you.

We are all a bit different, and appreciate different themes, settings, etc. So the best writing program is the one you use the most.

I use open office because I'm a bigger Cheapskate than you.

EDIT: There seems to be some programs that go well with self-publishing, maybe look into that, if that is your thing? I don't know which programs though.

I’ve always used Microsoft Word. It works for me, so I’ve stuck with it.

Go with what you’re most comfortable with.

It doesn't matter. Write on toilet paper with a chicken feather dipped in your own blood if you want to (and can find a publisher who will accept submissions that way).

I am just glad people have not come back and said I should use some standard programme that everyone else uses. All I have been told is to write in TNR size 12 which I do (although my personal preference is Avenir Light size 11 I realise I am a fucking nerd saying this

I used Word until I couldn't get it free anymore. Cheapskate here! Now I use Apache Open Office.
Use what works best for the writer!

The thing is, Microsoft Word is the application that answers to the description you just gave. I use Scrivener and am consonantly on the receiving end of what you are trying to avoid.
