    Getting back to writing

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by jwideman, Feb 14, 2013.

So after getting my first book published (yay me) I struggled to write a second and ended up taking a long break from writing. Now I'm looking to get back into it.
To new writers, fear not rejection slips, for they become your armor.

    congrats on getting published!

is your book a novel, or non-fiction?

did you get a lot of rejections and then finally snag an agent and publisher?

    Welcome to Writing Forums, jwideman!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills. The requirements of the Writing Workshop don't apply to the contests, so new members are allowed (nay, encouraged!) to get stuck in and enter!

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

Good to meet you. Great job on getting published. What is your book called?

So what exactly was your problem with getting back into writing? Lack of inspiration? Hopefully we can help you out.

My book is available on Amazon and other ebook places. It is called "A Demon in Bed" and is, shall we say, not at all family friendly. The advantage of writing in such an unpopular subgenre is that there's so little competition that your writing only has to be not terrible, and then there's a whole bunch of disadvantages.
The biggest problem with writing a second novel (or in my case, novelette) is fear that your first success was a fluke. This fear haunted me as I tried to write another like that one and eventually I found excuses to not write at all.
Now I've run out of excuses.
As for rejections... I got plenty, but not for this book. This book was a special case and I was fortunate enough to know where to send it where it would be accepted immediately.

Rejection sucks, I'm sure, but if you don't even try again you're not achieveing any more than you would if you got rejected. In fact, you're achieving less. You're rejecting yourself. Just remember that and plough on, my friend!

I can't figure out how to get multi-quote working on this forum, so I'm not ignoring anyone on purpose.
Yes, it's an ebook. I don't know how well it did for Kindle sales since that was through my publisher. They sold it on their own site, on Amazon, at Fictionwise, etc. It's even on Sony's site (absurdly overpriced, so I doubt I'm getting any sales there.) But judging by my royalty checks, it's done surprisingly well for what it is.
It's actually much too short for print. I have the option to print it myself and have offered to do so for a few fans, but they balked at the price. Can't say I blame them there.

Congratulations on getting published. I think you made the right move by registering to theses forums and they will probably help you find the motivation to get back to writing. I would be interested in purchasing and reading your book. Could you provide me a link via PM?
