    Greetings

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by foxbrains, Oct 26, 2007.

    Hi,

I am new here. I had been lurking for a very long time, and just recently decided to join and to post. I am one of those people who wants to write, but cant start and cant finish. I think I write OK middles though. What is a story with no middle or no end, other than the ramblings of a lunatic...

I think I have finished exactly one short story, and one that I had as an assignment a long time ago. I am hoping this forum will help me get better at this. Lurking has already taught me alot.

I just wanted to say hello, and get my feet wet.

    Thanks

Hello foxbrains, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

By starting and finishing, I assume you mean the beginning and end of a story, as it's pretty difficult to write the middle or to finish if you've never started. Anyway, I'm sure you'll find plenty of people here who have had similar problems and can help you with strategies to overcome them.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room on this site, therefore, is a true workshop, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

I also struggle to complete pieces - I have found that the contests that are run here do help you try to complete pieces on certain topics within deadlines and I have found this has helped me train to finish. I am bias in trying to recruit you though as I run one of them. Your contribution in the short story contest would be welcome nevertheless! See you around the site.

    Contests

Hmm, I will definitely have to keep an eye out for the contests. I already tried my hand at the strong character contest. I didnt know there were other contests on the site. I will have to keep an eye out for them.

I am not sure that I can do a Halloween story too quickly. I may have to wait for the next contest.

I appreciate everyone's kind words. I am just a little lost and overwhelmed by all of the things I didnt know were here. I am looking for some honest critiques of my short story "Suspended Indefinitely" How doi I go about asking for those, or anything liek that. I am also not suere how I review a story or where to post reviews otr anything like that. I found inof on why to review, but havent found any pieces asking for reviews, or any reviews that I can read so that I know what to do.

    Help.

    Thanks
