    greetings!!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by afinemess, May 24, 2009.

    Hello,
I am currently working on my first novel. I came looking for a site to get some tips, and perhaps post some pieces of the novel for some true feedback. My husband seems to be biased that anything I write is amazing, and thinks the fact that i know how to write dialouge makes me a genius. LOL He is a sweetheart. I am a stay at home mom, a former hairdresser, nursing student, daycare worker....you name it I have done it in my 26 years. I wanted to be a writer after high school, but after a failed english 101 class in which my teacher laughed at me and told me I was horrible and to find a new major, I dropped out and until 6 months ago, havent written a word. I have a story, and it is exploding form my head onto paper, and even if I am as awful as she said, I dont care. I want to write, I love to write, and I went far to long letting an unhappy person make think I was less than spectacular. I look forward to exploring the site!!
    ~Amy;)

Must not have been much of a teacher. Hello, hope to read and review some of your work. I have not been here long and have already really enjoyed reading and reviewing some of the work here. I'm pretty sure they prefer you to review other peoples work before you post our own. Kind of like paying your dues, if you know what I mean. But, I think you will find that it's a lot easier then you might think to read through other people's writing and just give them an honest opinion of what you think. In return you’ll get their honest opinion of your work. This of course is what many of us here have come for.

    Have fun and keep writing.

Hello Amy, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Welcome! Its good to hear youve chosen to write again after such a long time. I think writing should just be about expressing yourself and its not something thats exclusive only to the greatest writers around (and Im sure youre better than your teacher made you feel)

Anyway, I hope to see you and your work around the forum in the future. :)
