It was a cloudless day, the Narcissus bobbed at its dock. The crew had completed their tasks and there was not a sound to be heard bar the clattering of dishes in the galley. The captain stood by the ramp awaiting his two hundred and fifty guests. About him children ran every now and then stopping to look up in awe at the behemoth that graced the waters. A few of the paupers had made use of the opportunely to sell flowers and nick knacks. Others made it an opportunity to pickpocket from the wealthy. As a precaution the police had found their way here also to uphold the law and tell those scum who was boss. The guests were beginning to arrive. Some more impressed by Captain Winchester’s ship then others who were so consumed by their own wealth they couldn’t see past any other besides themselves.” “Tickets, lady’s and gentleman, come forth and show your tickets.” Winchester said with a shout.
Armel Ackart stood in front of the ship holding his violin case in front of him. His heart hammered like a galloping horse and for several moments he thought to simply turn away from the ship and leave. Vomit rising in his throat he lurched forwards and dropped his Violin case besides him before kneeling before the waters edge and vomiting into the murky depths. Sea sick already and he hadn’t even stepped upon the ship. He stood up retrieved his handkerchief and wiped his mouth then retrieved his invitation. Dear Armel it read, you have been invited to attend the maiden voyage of the Narcissus, this is a opportunity that one may never have again in life. Do take it…. The ticket master would need those for him to board. Armel walked over to the ticket master and man with a fat belly and greying hair. He handed the tickets to him and the master scanned them before nodding his regards. “Welcome master Ackart, please leave your luggage over with the other bags and board the ship.” Armel nodded in response and put his bags with the others on the right side of the boarding ramp. No sooner then he had gotten on the boat a terrible sensation swept over him, Armel trembled they had heeded him well the thing was on the boat already.
Oh Father and Almighty Sovereign of the Universe give strength to your servant. I acknowledge my failings before you and beg on bent knees for your forgiveness. Please my Lord and God show me the path to salvation that you have hidden. “Reverend Pem?” I believe that you have revealed the state of my soul for just this purpose. Guide my hand and awaken my mind so I may discover the treasure of salvation you’ve hidden since time immemorial and save those souls entrusted to my care from hell fire. “Reverend Pem?” For all things are possible through faith and your guiding spirit. Amen. “Reverend Pem?” The Reverend Dr. Mordecai Pem leaned heavily on his desk to lift himself from the kneeing position. His knees popped and protested as his legs straightened and he massaged feeling back into the muscles. His housekeeper, Dolores, was standing in the doorway. “Yes Dolores.” She straightened her apron. “That Mr. Tempson is at the door. He couldn’t even wait for your vacation to start.” Pem smiled. “Now Dolores, just relax yourself. The Reverend Tempson is here to look after things while I’m away.” “Prying is more like it.” Pem chuckled. “Dolores, I said calm yourself.” “But after he started spreading all those rumors about you? About how you were talking to the dead and calling up devils? How can you just smile and let him take over? You know he’s here to snoop!” Reverend Pem patted the chubby housekeeper on the shoulder. “We are commanded to forgive even our enemies. Now don’t you worry. Let him snoop all he wants, there’s nothing to find.” Dolores smiled weakly. A quick fire rapping on the door broke the silence. Reverned Pem rolled his eyes. “Dolores when you said Tempson was at the door …” Dolores smiled, and sighed. “Alright Reverend, I’ll pull back the bolt.” Reverend Pem opened his satchel. The light fell on three objects, his family bible, a large leather bound notebook, and his invitation. He pulled out the invitation and read it one last time. Dear Reverend Dr. Mordecai Pem, You have been invited to attend the maiden voyage of the Narcissus, this is a opportunity that one may never have again in life. Do take it…. The ships tickets are attached beneath. The Reverend shook himself from his revelry as a chubby man examined his tickets. Tempson would already be searching through every drawer and box locked or unlocked. Feeling the reassuring weight of his satchel, Mordecai smiled. He found the rocking of the ship comforting. Like a big rocking chair. No parishioners, no Tempson, just peace, quiet, and plenty of time to study scriptures – both authorized and unauthorized. He saw a familiar face on the deck clutching a violin case and looking deathly seasick. “Yes,” said Reverend Pem, “The Lord truly works in mysterious ways.”
Cain Shields opened his eyes as the first rays of the morning sun fell on his face. He grunted, untangling his body from the small sofa. An older woman came into the room, holding a cup of tea. "Cain, dear, how did you sleep?" "Fine. I'm very sorry, Mrs. Brown. It's just...I've been through some hard times recently. I've almost got enough money for the house." The woman shook her head. "It's not a problem. You're welcome here any time." Cain grabbed his pack from the table and pulled on his coat as the doorbell rang. Mrs. Brown scurried off to get it. Cain put on his glasses and looked in the mirror. He hadn't shaved in days, and his hair was messy and stuck up in random places. I really do look like a alchoholic. Suddenly Mrs. Brown entered the room, holding a letter. "Cain, the postman said to give this to you. I'm not sure how he knew you were here, but..." She passed the letter to Cain, who opened it. Dear Cain Shields, You have been invited to attend the maiden voyage of the Narcissus, this is a opportunity that one may never have again in life. Do take it…. Cain's brows furrowed. "This is just what I need, Mrs. Brown. It's a free cruise on a ship. I can relax there. Thank you for all your hospitality." She nodded and said something about being safe. Cain opened the door and headed for the time of his life.
Armel’s lip quivered when he spotted reverend Pem. It wasn’t enough that he felt awkward and drained. Now this man was here. Armel’s family brought into religion. They were one of those disastrous families who thought money brought the tickets to heaven. Every Sunday, concerts if Armel’s musical career didn’t get in the way he would attend church a rule made by his father. He was twenty seven and still his father commanded what Armel should and should not have. Every woman Armel had brought home was to stupid or to sickly sweet. Every friend could not be trusted and was not loyal. When Armel argued with his father. His dad would turn away and say a boy as special as you can only have the best. If he was so special why did he have such terrible parents?
Pem watched the boy turn away quickly and pretend not to notice him. The Reverend shrugged with a smile. There would be time for them to talk later. Right now, he had his devotionals to attend to.
"Dear Clare Goldsmith You have been invited to attend the maiden voyage of the Narcissus, this is an opportunity that one may never have again in life. Do take it…. The ships tickets are attached beneath." It was just as the letter said, an opportunity of once in a lifetime, and Clare was certainly going to take it. Left beginning were here ever-worrying maid and the expensive education her father had bought here. 'I don't need that,' she thought to herself as she showed her tickets to the man and was let pass. She had to admit that she was awed at the size of the ship, and rare were the things that surprised or wondered her lately. Arranging to have her baggages be taken to her room, Clare spent her time at the deck, looking at the people boarding the ship. The sea breeze played with her short dark hair and she held it back to keep looking, most people looked boring and just the type she wanted to avoid, but some looked interesting enough to at least hold a good conversation. She smiled a little to herself, maybe it wouldn't be so boring after all.
