    Hello and help?

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Milkmeat, Apr 13, 2009.

Hey everybody! I'm Milkmeat. I'm 21 years old, I'm from Canada, and I haven't done any writing since English class in high school.

I'm here because for months now I've had this urge to write, because a lot of the time I'm bored and I know a pen and paper will always be available.

The problem is, however, I have absolutely NO idea what to write.

Okay, thats not quite true. I don't know exactly what to write. I really want to write something pro wrestling related because its been my life long passion, but I don't know where to start, or what the end product would be.

If anybody has any tips, wants to take me under their wing, or wants to say "Hi! How's the bud in Canada?" The answer is great. But help anyways?

    Thanks,
    Milkmeat.

If you took that specifically for me, I'm honored at the time you must have wasted. If its only a copy and paste... you broke my heart.

Hey there. Just a quick hint, spend some time reading other people's work on the site, offering constructive comments (as a rule of the forum, you must review work before posting your own). This may also help get your creative juices going, pay specific attention to people's personal writing styles.
Anyway, I'll admit I have no knowledge of pro-wrestling. But I do know a little something about feeling stuck. Could begin writing pieces of flash fiction, short pieces that cover one specific scene or exhibit a particular emotion/idea. For instance, write a piece (under 1000 words, usually between 400-600) describing a fight between wrestlers or examine a wrestler preparing for a fight. It could be just a way to get things rolling, although I'm certainly not one to preach. I hope I helped. I look foward to reading your work in the future. Have fun!

Okay, now I feel special. Thanks!

Great suggestion! Thanks a whole lot. Since you two are so helpful for a rookie like me, how about I do my first reviews(?) on your favourite works?

Hmmmm... I'm going to pretend for good measure that I don't play favorites - but I do spend time in the short stories, general fiction forum.

Well I meant like your personal favourite out of what you've done, but I'll make my first stop where you said.

No favorites, but I have some things in the poetry section you can look at. :)

Hello Milkmeat, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

You might start be thinking about why you want to write. I think that mostr of us have stories that get into our heads and need to be let out lest they burst through our crania. What kinds of stories do you like to read? Or perhaps you feel drawn to turn moments of joy or agony into poetry? What do you see or hear that makes you think, Yes, but what if...?

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here though. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Hi and welcome to the site! Hope to see you around. Since you mentioned a passion for pro wrestling, maybe your first stop should be to *really* research the subject...learn all the ins and outs. That's a good way to create inspiration :-D

    ~Lynn
