Hi people, my name is vividmind I have developed writing as a new hobby lately and looking to expand my creativity. I've always had a strong imagination but never explored it into writing, so here I am. I know very little about writing stories so any advice would be fully appreciated.
Are you an avid reader? Reading some well established authors and finding your right medium and genre tends to be a great place to start. Welcome!
Hi, sorry i haven't responded I've been up to my eyeballs with work. Ironically I'm not a big reader however I (try) to stick my nose into a book. My biggest problem is that I get distracted easily and procrastinate a lot. I do however have a pretty strong imagination. I have never been diagnosed with it but i think I may have excessive daydreaming. If you have any recommendations I'll try to get around them. I do like fantasy. Thank you.
I think it's time to translate your excessive day dreaming into the world of imagination and writing. Welcome!
Welcome, vividmind. Last Sunday, I had lunch with a friend who is just wrapping up his first book. He had been working on it for several years, it seemed to have stalled, and then he finished it. At one point during our lunch he said that what got him going again was the best advice he had ever received: "The secret to writing is to sit down and write." He asked me if I knew who told him that. I answered that I had no idea. "You did," he said.
I'm actually thinking of hiring a tutor to help me with my grammar and creative writing. I have found one in my area but haven't contacted them yet.
I would consider grammar and creative writing to be essentially unrelated. The important thing is to get the words flowing and recorded, either on paper or digitally. The stories can be edited for grammar later, whether by you or by an editor.
Ah, the memories... back when I thought that I can't write a novel because I don't have an English degree...
I work with the team at the story ninjas. Their feedback has helped my writing quite a bit. They use the story grid method. Take a look at "wired for story" by Lisa cron as well. That book was a huge help with characters. Hope this helps. Welcome and good luck.
