I have lived in the mountains of eastern Kentucky all of my life. (I'm not sure as to whether I should state that I am a hillbilly, as some people may think the worst, so I will not mention it here). I am in my thirties, a mother to 3 children, and I love to read. I can usually devour a book in two days or less, depending upon the size and the free time that I have. I have been a lurker for a while and joined the forum last week, and well, this is my introduction. I have so many stories stuck in my head that I just need to go ahead and put them down on paper. I attended college way back when, and did very well in all of my English and Literature classes, but I do need to touch up on a lot of grammar issues. I write much better than I speak, so that is a start. Adventures, mysteries, and any books that have travel in them are my favorites. I also like reading science fiction and fantasy books. I can remember the very first book that I checked out of the public library. I was nine years old and I selected 'The Secret Garden'. After I read that book, I just had to feed my mind with more. I was reading biographies all through grade school, and graduated to novels by the seventh grade. In Junior High, I read all of the Stephen King books that were available at that time. I visit the library weekly and pick up 3-4 novels to read for the week. I read more quickly than others, so I can usually read a novel straight through in a couple of hours. I do not watch television very often, I read instead. I guess that is enough about my reading habits. Sometimes, when I get started on a subject, I just tend to go on and on, sorry about that. -The Dreamer
Hello Dreamer, Welcome to the Writing Forums. You seem to be naturally skilled at organizing your thoughts. The intro threads tend to be very much off the cuff, but yours flows very naturally. Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
